Sustained Imagination and Belief

​Barry says: "There’s an old proverb – If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales".

There’s magic in Imagination.

Children naturally have an awesome sense of creativity and Imagination. If their brain wants to play, it will make up the best and most exciting adventure, conjuring up all manner of non-sensical, yet illustrative possibilities through boundless potentialities. Can we fly? Absolutely. Can we eat space-mud? Why not? For sure. Its just awesome to see a human being unrestrained from the shackles of ‘keeping it real’.

As adults very few of us actually use the power of Imagination to live out our own personal potential. We tend to recognise the term as child’s play or worse, not living in ‘reality’.

When we’re re-inventing any part of our lives, Imagination is the blueprint to build your future.

SO keeping in the true spirit of Imagination,  Barry has invented two distinct tribes. The KIRCS and the KICCs.

‘Keeping it real crowd’ –  the (KIRC’s). In this tribe, no one really steps out of their comfort zone – they do tomorrow what was done yesterday and their work week resembles more of a cookie-cut outfit, rather than daring to plunge into any type of daring adventure that could lead to personal bliss. Its seemingly safe there, its warm, and most who live there will sight security and a familiar outcome as the reason they live there. Children are usually taught to play it safe combined with harsh, sometime fear-based lessons on how risk taking is for others and more than often than not, leads you down an unhappy or disappointing path. The only imagination that exists here lie in the occasional fairy-tale stories that are read to their children before sleep. KIRC’s children will one day stop reading fairy-tales and unfortunately their imagination for possibilities will ultimately extinguish.

The second crowd is the ‘keeping it creative’ tribe (KICC’s). In this crowd, unconventional thinking is encouraged. KICC’s like their KIRC’s counterparts also read fairy-tales to their children – but with a deeper understanding between the link germinating from imagination to creative thinking that can lead to unconventional solutions into adulthood. The link then between possibilities and probabilities is also corrosion free. KICC’s kids, somewhat like their parents take certain risks in childhood as well as when they become adults. Not because any outcome is certain but because risk taking is part of out daily routine anyway.


If we can Imagine a future and believe it can exist. It’s only a matter of time….

So the question Barry asks is; "Do you have the courage to imagine a future you want for yourself, seek opportunities to that end –  and can you suspend your disbelief until it manifests?"

Trying to be positive takes more than keeping a smile on your face and being pleasant, especially when your brain is still locked in the negative fight or flight loop.

To cope with modern life we need to  be  able to think creatively and be free of  stress driven programs because they're overwhelming us and making us sick.

Everyone is born creative; everyone is given a box of crayons in kindergarten. Then when you hit puberty they take the crayons away and replace them with dry, uninspiring books on algebra, history, etc. Being suddenly hit years later with the 'creative bug' is just a wee voice telling you, "I'd like my crayons back, please".

The real you is still a little child who never grew up. Sometimes that little child comes out to play, when you are having fun; when you feel happy; when you are painting; or writing poetry; or playing the piano, or expressing yourself in some way. These are the happiest moments of your life - when the real you comes out, when you don't care about the past and you don't worry about the future. You are childlike.

If you are like me, you might have wondered how to be endlessly creative and find inspiration when none is to be found, how to rediscover the child inside of yourself with some of these ideas.

Reconnect with Amazement and Wonder

“Wonder is the beginning of wisdom.” ― Socrates

One of the major lessons in creativity that you can learn from a child is being repeatedly amazed at the beauty and joy of life. Children are endlessly curious. However, as they grow up, they lose some of that child-like wonder and begin acting more like an adult.

Amazement and wonder transform into habitual motion through life. I challenge you to do a small exercise right now. For a few minutes, look at your surroundings and at life through the lens of a child.

Bring back some of that wonder and amazement and the wide-eyed surprise and joy of navigating through life.

Allow yourself to experience great lengths of curiosity. Ask yourself and others, questions that you would otherwise not ask as an adult. Allow yourself the joy of looking at the ever-changing landscape of life through a filter of wonder. Be unabashedly curious.

Believe that the impossible is possible

Why is it that when you grow up and become an adult, your possibilities narrow down to almost nothing? There was a time when you were a child and believed that anything was possible. You believed that you could be anything, create anything, sing anything and make anything.  Then life happened to you and people kept saying what you should do and what you should not do.

Slowly but surely you became inhibited and stopped dancing in front of others. You began believing that your song should not be shared with the world and that it is not safe to be you.

So you pretended.

When you were a child, you pretended to be whatever you wanted to be. As you grew up, you pretended to be what others wanted you to be. The sparkle in the eyes slowly faded away to transform into worry and fear.

I challenge you to believe that the dream of yours that you have been imagining is certainly possible. Grasp the notion that you may have lived a life to please others so far, but you can still sing your own song.
You can choose to step into the field of possibility and embrace true creative abundance.

Reconnect with your inner playful child and begin to believe that the impossible is possible. When you approach creativity from the standpoint of endless possibility, you have a better chance to crack the creative lull.

Work is play

We have all seen children play together. They have the incredible ability to make daily life look like play and infuse it with laughter and joy.

Do you remember how playful you were as a child? As you grew into an adult, you trained yourself to be serious and control your natural inclination for joy and laughter.

You might have trained yourself to be very serious at work but if you lighten up and be relaxed, it is a lot more pleasurable. Children have the ability to get together in groups and infuse the area with lightness and play.  Have you seen children sit perfectly still at a bench and work for extended periods of time? Left to their devices, children move around and express their magic in motion and in art. 

Creating a light hearted and joyful working environment will certainly make the experience of work more enjoyable and I am willing to take a guess that your productivity may also go up. One of the major considerations in creating Teapot Teas was about bringing in some lightness and jest to a once very ‘proper’ experience enjoyed with a stiff upper lip by the upper class. 

So my first task was to give playful names that really described how you would feel after having a sip. With names like: Are You Listening To Me? Our focus and concentration formula, Lemon Tart With A Heart our heart warming digestive tisane, Kiss Me On My Tulips the sexual energiser for women or You’re So Dreamy or sleepy time tea. 

Make some time to set up your working area to inspire your creativity.

Being present: the state of flow

Children just seem to be highly present in the moment. Children can effortlessly move with the grace of a ballerina and paint with the grace of a tiny Picasso.  As a child, you were in a state of flow quite effortlessly. You did not have to struggle or make a massive attempt at it. You just were.

If you allow yourself to move through life with more ease and drop off some of the resistance, you begin to experience flow. Focus your attention and engage deeply with a project to experience the state of effortless being.

Sharpen your skills of observation by being present to the current moment. Live in the now and observe for solutions that you might otherwise miss.
