Happiness and Wellbeing: How your beliefs affect both

Deep within, you have beliefs developed over your lifetime which can affect your happiness and well-being. A positive belief system creates different life experiences to a negative one. One offers optimism, whilst the other instills pessimism.

If you have a belief system that does not support you, you will feel it in your emotions, feelings and general health. You can change how you feel, by discovering the beliefs which cause you to feel unhappy.

Positive and negative internal beliefs raise or lower your self-esteem and confidence. They often operate in the background, as instructions or commands, that condition you to live and behave in a certain way.

Some people seem to naturally experience happiness and well-being whilst others appear to be plagued by problems or mishaps. Each person’s belief system plays a large part in the way their life unfolds.

What is a belief?

A belief is an interpretation, meaning or conclusion drawn from a life experience that in turn becomes the foundation for the way you view life. It is something that you accept and believe to be true, based on the supporting evidence of the experience. A belief is different from a fact. A fact is something that actually exists. It is a reality or a truth. A belief may or may not be true. One example of a belief that is not a fact is that, for many years, people believed that the earth was flat.

Here are some examples of positive and negative beliefs which I have heard people express recently. They highlight how differently people expect to experience life.

"I focus on what I want to create"

“Everything always goes well for me”.

“I have a great life”.

or

“I always have the worst luck”.

“Everything always goes wrong for me”.

“I hate my job”.

“It’s one drama after another”.

Some people say that the glass is either half-full or half-empty, depending on their philosophy of life. (why can't it just be full?). Optimism and pessimism influence both how you feel and how you experience life. They also influence how successful you can be  in life. Those that have a positive, life enhancing mindset are more inclined to keep trying, create new ideas and follow through on their goals and dreams.

Each day we are influenced by our beliefs and thoughts, very often they rattle around in our head without us taking the time to be consciously aware of them. Today, simply observe how you think, what you hear yourself saying to yourself and acknowledge whether these thoughts are positive or negative.

One of the simplest way to change the way you think, when your thoughts are not as positive as you would like them to be, is to write down the not so positive thought, and directly opposite on a piece of paper write the new positive thought that you will use to replace it. This is especially important if you run your own business. Running your own business has its own successes and challenges, and having a positive life enhancing mindset will be much more beneficial to you in the long run than a 'not so positive' one.

A positive mind set will keep you focused on what you want to achieve, it will keep your energy high and keep you motivated and moving in the direction of your goals and dreams.

So, there is only one question to ask you: Which type of thoughts will you choose?
